 Extended pool hours rejected

Extended pool hours rejected

29 Jun, 2011 11:14 AM
Blackheath pool's opening hours will be cut back next season despite a boost in numbers during extended opening times last summer.

While the pool recorded more than 200 additional visits during the extended hours over the 2010/11 season, the extra numbers failed to offset costs and saw Blue Mountains City Council (BMCC) pay $82 per additional visit, a report to the council stated.

BMCC staff recommended at last night (Tuesday's) meeting that the hours revert back to the 2009/10 season, which saw the pool open from 7am to 7pm with a five-hour closure between 10am and 3pm on school days, and 10am to 7pm on weekends and public holidays.

Ward 1 councillor Terri Hamilton moved that the council maintain the extended hours, arguing the trial had not been long enough.

"I feel we have only had this for one season, it's not long enough for people to know what's going on there," she said.

"[We should] have another go at it to see what happens."

But she was in the minority, with Clr Alison McLaren saying ratepayers should not have to foot such an expensive bill.

"At $82 per person I don't think I am prepared to support this," she said.

"That's an amazing subsidy and no resident of the Blue Mountains should be expected to subsidise a swimming visit to that extent."

Clr Hamilton's motion only received four votes in favour and was declared lost. Staff recommendations to revert back to the pool's original hours were then passed nine votes to three.

Perhaps the council could then shift the money saved into do some basic maintenance and repairs in the Blackheath area rather than sit in the ivory towers in Katoomba engaging in naval gazing

Rest assured "AKB", any savings made from this decision will be redirected *away* from Blackheath by lower Ward Councillors who continue to cry poor.

Clearly they're too busy to consult ABS figures which underscore significant socio-economic disadvantage in the upper mountains.

How Labor councillors can countenance further cutting essential upper mountains community facilities is beyond me.

It is high time Council stopped the perennial threats against any improvements and issues regarding Blackheath Pool. This pool, like others,is a community amenity and council rates/admission fees should have to suffice without petty wage gripes.

This pool has to be the healthiest pool in the mountains/yes,without the heating/in comparison to the over-heated and over-crowded Katoomba pools.

Also ,reverting to the totally unacceptable and limited opening times for the next season discriminates against a section of the community whose lifestyle prevents swimming at these odd times

Disgusting !!

Wet weather pushes down patronage at any outdoor facility. But this is NOT taken into account assessing Blackheath Pool patronage in this report.

Sad summer weather aside, February patronage vastly INCREASED over the previous year, the bulk of that was middle-of-the-day visits. Consider these statistics... in 2010 there were 706 individual February visits, in 2011 3099! That’s a more-than-400% increase. And this AFTER the school holidays. You couldn’t ask for better! But this too is missing from the report.

As Emeritus Prof. Ian Lowe stated in January on Radio National “...this is the strongest La Nina ever recorded”.

In the upper mountains, December 2010 was the wettest in 15 years, and the trend continued across the season with 19 rain days in January, 16 rain days in February, and 22 rain days in March.

Contrary to Council's report last season was a remarkable SUCCESS given weather!

It may have been a wet summer , but it was also warm.

For the record – this unheated, outdoor pool was warm & pleasant – peaking at 29 degrees on February 1st.

It can’t be emphasised too often that Blackheath Pool is WARM *not cold*!

I cannot resist a second comment on this issue, but I have already mentioned to Friends of Blackheath Pool that there is no way I shall attend the pool at 10am opening ,but I also sympathise with those who wish to use the pool when it will be closed during the day

I believe this is a "not so hidden" agenda by Council to force down attendance next season in order to yet again threaten to close the pool
