Senior citizens across the Blue Mountains have reason to thank Joan Vaughn Taylor (pictured).
Residents over the age of 75 can now enjoy free entry to council’s pools courtesy of an election campaign encounter the Faulconbridge resident had with Blue Mountains mayor Adam Searle.
“Joan approached me during the election campaign to see if there was any way council could make pool entry free for over-85s,” said Clr Searle.
But when it came time to discuss this year’s budget, council went one better and made pool entry free for all residents over the age of 75.
“It was a genuinely good idea to help promote health and wellbeing for our more mature residents,” said Clr Searle.
Mrs Vaughn Taylor, who swims twice a week at Springwood Aquatic Centre, couldn’t be happier her suggestion has become official council policy.
“I pointed out at the time that it would really save the council money because there would be fewer people who are older that would need the council help in their homes because we would all be fit,” said the 89-year-old.
Clr Searle couldn’t agree more.
“Regular exercise is extremely important for older residents in order to prevent serious health problems. Swimming is recognised as a physical activity well suited to seniors. One of the main benefits of swimming allows older people to tone and strengthen their bodies without the impact of weight bearing sports,” he said.
Free pool entry for patrons over 75 came into effect on July 1. The policy applies to pool entry only and does not include spa/sauna or fitness centres.
