Julia Gillard mobbed during Springwood streetwalk

20 Aug, 2010 04:50 PM
Prime Minister Julia Gillard received a rockstar's welcome during an impromptu streetwalk of Springwood on Friday afternoon.

Ms Gillard arrived shortly before 4pm outside Springwood's Early Childhood Centre and met ALP candidate Susan Templeman and retiring Member for Macquarie Bob Debus before crossing the road to greet wildly cheering Labor supporters at the town square.

"You're an inspiration to us," one young supporter told the PM.

A massive crowd gathered on the footpaths and Macquarie Road traffic ground to a halt as the prime minister made her way up to the Oriental Hotel, pausing to shake hands and say "g'day" to the throngs of people who came out to greet her.

Ms Gillard was delighted when she spotted young Raffty Ellis, whose birthday falls tomorrow, in the crowd sporting a "Julia Gillard is my homegirl" t-shirt.

"Look at that, that's fantastic," she said.

"Happy birthday. That's got to be a good omen, doesn't it?"

Raffty's dad Matthew Ellis, of Katoomba, was pleased to be supporting the prime minister and Ms Templeman.

"Of course I am voting Labor tomorrow, we want to go forwards not backwards," he said.

"It's important for his [Raffty's] future."

Anne Nicholson, of Warrimoo, brought grandson Max Parkin out to meet Ms Gillard and said she was delighted to greet the prime minister.

"It was fantastic," she said. "She's got my vote."

One supporter told Ms Gillard, "I told you two years ago you were going to be prime minister".

"You were right, thank you. Now we've got to see what happens tomorrow, that's the next stage," Ms Gillard said.

The crowd's response was overwhelmingly positive, with clapping, cheering and at least one marriage proposal from a teenage fan before Ms Gillard was eventually whisked away in her Commonwealth car.

One detractor, however, shouted "backstabber" outside the Oriental Hotel before being taken aside by Ms Gillard's federal police protectors, while a motorist stuck in traffic on the nearby roundabout shouted, "Go Tony" through an open car window.

It was the first time Ms Gillard has visited the Blue Mountains as prime minister. Her last visit to the area was during the Kevin 07 campaign.

some people are very easily pleased and you cannot put brains in statues, if people are so easily swayed by placard, balloon carrying parades and not what is really taking place in their country, then I am afraid to say our country is in great peril

Our wonderful country will be in "great peril" if we all adopt a negative attitude and begrudge a few people enjoying themselves. "Life is mostly froth and bubble" and if all you have to worry about are a few balloons then I think you should count yourself lucky. There are lots of places in the world where people are denied the right to express an opinion and vote

Well, Australia's certainly in great peril now. Far too many people accepted the dodgy logic and outright lies of the Libs and the Murdoch press and chose to ignore our country's economic prosperity, envied by the rest of the world, since the global financial crisis. The election result has made me deeply concerned for our nation's future.

Grumpy Elderly Woman, 22/08/2010 9:35:12 AM Very well stated. You get my vote.

As a new resident to the Blue Mountains, and in my opinion, Susan Templeman maintained the dignity of all ALP members, campaigning as their candidate, for the redistributed federal electorate of Macquarie. Susan fought back the substantial average swing vote counted last Saturday night following the closing of polling throughout that day. I have read newspapers, viewed TV & heard radio reports, reporting her whereabouts, as she knocked on doors meeting constituents, campaigned enthusiastically in the newly redistributed Macquarie electorate. Her share of the vote of the reported preference count at 49.11% when compared to her opponents 50.89% , represents, in my view a great effort of achievement for Susan's skills and all who worked supporting her candidature. In my view the ALP can build on her achievement at the next federal election when, hopefully, Susan Templeman can again challenge her opponent. Congratulations Susan Templeman.

I agree with Ralf, Susan Templeman ran a great campaign. She was prepared to meet the community and meet her challengers, unlike her Liberal Party opponent. If Tony Abbott is successful in becoming PM, I am concerned for this country. Over the years he has demonstrated a meanness of spirit, disregard for the homeless, those seeking refuge, the unemployed, women, to name a few groups he has disparaged. We deserve leadership that recognises the rights of all not just the more fortunate members of our community. We deserve leadership that is willing to consult with the community and to listen to all quarters not just their own narrow constituency.
