Lawson girl Emma Cam has taken one small step in crossing the great cultural divide between the lookers and bookworms of this world.
The Miss Universe Australia finalist is currently appearing on Channel 7 reality program Beauty and the Geek.
The show pits eight pairs of beauties and ‘geeks’ against each other for an eventual prize of $100,000.
Filming has wrapped up so for all we know Emma could already have pocketed her $50,000 share, though a strict confidentiality agreement means her lips are tightly sealed.
In the meantime she is struggling with the reality of seeing herself on television each week.
“I want to watch the show but every time I come on screen I throw a pillow over my head and can’t watch it . . . I can’t stand to hear myself or see myself on TV,” she said.
Contestants were thrown into a mix of challenges with the aim to help the beauties hone their academic abilities and teach the geeks some much-needed social skills.
Emma and partner Jeremy ended up forming a fruitful relationship for both sides.
“I really wanted to see if I could help any of the guys out and hopefully he could help me out as well . . . I don’t think that I’m stupid but I do find it hard to have that self-confidence,” said Emma.
“Jeremy was the most amazing partner I could ever ask for . . . He really made me see that I can do so much more than I really think I can.”
After being sealed off from the ‘real world’ for eight weeks while filming took place, Emma is still getting used to having control over her own life again. Apart from “having a million cameras pushed in your face all the time”, contestants had no access to phones, internet or television.
Catch Emma on Beauty and the Geek at 8.30pm on Thursday nights on Channel 7.
