 Major upgrade for Glenbrook pool

Major upgrade for Glenbrook pool

24 Aug, 2011 09:21 AM
Speculation Glenbrook pool could close has been “killed stone dead” following the announcement $900,000 has been proposed for its biggest upgrade since opening.

Deputy Mayor Mark Greenhill and fellow Ward 4 councillor Fiona Creed said Blue Mountains City Council (BMCC) had earmarked the money in next year’s budget for a major overhaul of the centre.

“What we are announcing . . . is we have successfully had $900,000 set aside for next year’s budget in order to bring about the upgrade of Glenbrook swim centre,” Clr Greenhill told the Gazette.

“This still has to be voted on by council but we have worked hard in budget sessions to have this money quarantined.

“Provided it receives the support of our colleagues, it will see the biggest boost to Glenbrook swim centre since it first opened.

“This kills stone dead speculation that Glenbrook could close in the future. Council would not make such a big investment if there was any risk of this pool not staying open.

“This secures the future of Glenbrook swimming pool.”

The Gazette revealed last November that a shadow had been cast over the future of all local swimming pools as BMCC faced maintenance bills worth millions of dollars, and Glenbrook’s proximity to the popular Springwood Aquatic Centre caused speculation it could be in the firing line.

Clr Creed said the work to be completed under the proposed funding included replacing the entire shell of the main pool, an upgrade to the machinery that runs the pool, as well as a general spruce up.

“We are replacing the pool shell for the main pool, there is a plant upgrade and there’s also a general space upgrade of the centre, which Glenbrook pool badly needs,” she said.

“When there is inclement weather and swimming club is on, they only have a tiny area and there’s not enough cover out there.

“Hopefully some of the staff facilities will be spruced up as well.

“This upgrade will be of benefit to all the users. Glenbrook pool traditionally attracts people from other areas and by council spending this money we are hoping it will increase the patronage of Glenbrook pool and visitation rates. We will be encouraging our fellow councillors to vote for this because it’s very important for Glenbrook pool.”

Councillors will vote on the issue shortly and Clr Greenhill said the work would be planned “as much as possible” outside the swimming season.

What about Lawson and Blackkheath pools. I hope they also have some money in the pipeline.

@Ruth, There would have to be some allocated for the other villages as well. If not then Council should at the very least split it 3 ways. It would be seen as favouritism otherwise.

Interesting quote by Councillor Greenhill. If such a big investment guarantees the continued operation of Glenbrook pool, then surely the financial commitment shown by Council to Blackheath pool should guarantee the continued operation of this pool also. Mountain residents as well as visitors use Blackheath pool also. I'm very happy to support money spent on Glenbrook pool but is it is subject to the same scrutiny as Blackheath? Unfortunately, the same argument has been made by Councillors Greenhill and Creed for Glenbrook as they refused to use for Blackheath. Let's be fair councillors

@eucalypt is right. Of course, Councillors Greenhill and Creed don't need votes in Blackheath next year. This appears to be a very cynical article designed to do nothing more than appeal to voters coincidentally 1 month before Mayoral elections and 12 months before Council elections!

Blackheath pool's future IS guaranteed unless i'm out of the loop re the latest conspiracy theory. And with Glenbrook pool haveing much higher attendance figures than blackheath i'd say it well and truly justifies the expenditure . .

Not a conspiracy theory but fact. If people don't know when a facility is going to be open, they tend not to bother going. There go your attendances. Blackheath pool hours have been juggled around so much, nobody can say when it is open. I am pleased for the users of Glenbrook pool it is going to be upgraded and also happy you know when you can throw on your swimmers on and go for a swim. With the changes again this season, either early morning swimmers or those who can go during the middle of the day will miss out. I would like to think Glenbrook and Blackheath were treated equally.

I agree with Eucalypt. I will be closely watching Clrs Greenhill and Creed, next time issues surrounding Blackheath pool are up for debate. I am happy to be called a cynic when it comes to this matter. Us folks of Blackheath must remain vigilant!

[LETTER TO EDITOR]

Dear Sir,

Re: ‘Glenbrook in the swim’ (24 August 2011)

It’s great to see Councillors working together to secure the future of Glenbrook Pool. This will benefit the whole Mountains swimming community.

While revitalisation work is in progress we invite Glenbrook swimmers to join us at beautiful Blackheath Pool. Hop on the train for a leisurely stress-free ride up the hill, then a short stroll from the station.

Average water temperature 23?C throughout the season. Opens 26 November with free fun day.
