The Roaring ’20s and all that Jazz Festival kicked off in fine style in Leura on Saturday as scores of visitors dressed in period clothes took over The Mall to dance the Charleston.
Unfortunately the Charleston Challenge Downunder world record attempt fell short of its target of 251 dancers but the event was still a huge success in enticing people into the village.
It was a step back in time in the main street with a range of vintage cars also on show as part of the Leura Village Association’s annual Automobile Picnic.
Blue Mountains Lithgow and Oberon Tourism (BMLOT) chairman Randall Walker said the day was a fitting opening to the month-long Roaring ’20s festival.
“It was a wonderful visual spectacle for visitors and a nice start to the Roaring ’20s, and to see all of those participants make the effort to be in period costume is wonderful,” said Mr Walker.
With the hope of some better weather in the lead-up to next year’s event, Mr Walker was confident of improving on the 175 who danced on Saturday to give the Charleston record a shake in 2013.
“I think the word will get out there and I’m confident we’ll get the target next year,” he said.
The second edition of the Roaring ’20s festival has built on the success of last year, with a boost in events on the program.
“We’re looking forward to enjoying the growth. There’s lots of activities across the calendar . . . I think what’s wonderful is so many operators and shopkeepers are embracing the festival,” said Mr Walker.
The festival is part of a concerted push by BMLOT to develop events that encourage more people to visit the Blue Mountains, with a particular focus on encouraging tourists to stay overnight.
“It’s absolutely certain that this strategic focus on events . . . will definintely increase visitation,” he said.
