Just over three weeks into CityRail’s new timetable and minor improvements in services can not mask the fact Mountains concerns were mostly overlooked when the schedule was drawn up, according to a local commuter body.
Blue Mountains Commuter and Transport Users Association (BMCTUA) secretary Paul Trevaskis said the main problem with the changes was there were not enough.
The association made a number of recommendations to RailCorp while the timetable was being formulated that included addressing extended travel times to the CBD and overcrowding.
After speaking to Mountains commuters at two recent meetings, Mr Trevaskis said the problems remained.
“The response from RailCorp was not satisfactory,” said Mr Trevaskis. “(There were) no changes to the old timetable to any great degree.”
Hazelbrook resident, Col McDonnell, who catches the train to his Sydney Water job at Parramatta, had a mixed reaction to the new timetable. He said on-time services had become more common and dwell times at stations had been reduced but overcrowding remained an issue.
“It’s the thing that we all hate and that’s pulling up at Penrith and taking on a horrendous number of people into our trains,” said Mr McDonnell. “It’s not a good service for them and it’s not a good service for us. It’s something we’ve been fighting up here for a long time.
“I’m happy with the service, but it could be better.”
A spokesman for RailCorp said there was no justification for services skipping Penrith since no Blue Mountains trains were heavily loaded before reaching the stop.
He said the new timetable had been successful in better balancing passenger loads through three changes — two early-morning Lithgow to Sydney services no longer stop at Blacktown (one also misses Granville) and a Mount Victoria service to the city now has six rather than four carriages.
Despite what the spokesman described as a small number of complaints from local commuters, no alterations were made to the new Blue Mountains timetable following a RailCorp review of its first two weeks in operation.
