The controversial Faulconbridge crematorium proposal could soon be thrust onto the state stage following NSW Upper House MP Lee Rhiannon’s vow to take up the issue.
The Greens MP visited the Mountains last Thursday, May 27 to meet with the party’s Macquarie candidate, Carmel McCallum, and chat to local lobby groups about traffic issues, Springwood’s rejuvenation and the proposed crematorium.
Ms Rhiannon said she was impressed by the anti-crematorium lobbyists’ arguments, saying the proposed site on the Great Western Highway was “clearly the wrong place for a crematorium”.
The research done by local lobbyists could be used as the impetus for drawing up state and even national standards for crematoriums, she said.
“I was very impressed with the group working on this issue, not just working for their own needs but identifying that we need a set of statewide and nationwide standards,” Ms Rhiannon said.
“I will be discussing this issue with my colleague, [NSW Greens Upper House MP] Sylvia Hale, because I think they are really onto something.
“We need statewide standards and we can start here.”
Ms McCallum praised opponents for “really doing their homework” on the issue.
“We have Australian standards on nearly every other thing, I can’t believe we don’t have one on crematoriums,” she said.
The two also met with the Blackheath Transport Action Group to support its stance on heavy transport issues, as well as representatives from Save Our Springwood (SOS) who discussed options for the town’s revitalisation.
