State MP backs fight against Faulconbridge crematorium

01 Jun, 2010 01:31 PM
The controversial Faulconbridge crematorium proposal could soon be thrust onto the state stage following NSW Upper House MP Lee Rhiannon’s vow to take up the issue.

The Greens MP visited the Mountains last Thursday, May 27 to meet with the party’s Macquarie candidate, Carmel McCallum, and chat to local lobby groups about traffic issues, Springwood’s rejuvenation and the proposed crematorium.

Ms Rhiannon said she was impressed by the anti-crematorium lobbyists’ arguments, saying the proposed site on the Great Western Highway was “clearly the wrong place for a crematorium”.

The research done by local lobbyists could be used as the impetus for drawing up state and even national standards for crematoriums, she said.

“I was very impressed with the group working on this issue, not just working for their own needs but identifying that we need a set of statewide and nationwide standards,” Ms Rhiannon said.

“I will be discussing this issue with my colleague, [NSW Greens Upper House MP] Sylvia Hale, because I think they are really onto something.

“We need statewide standards and we can start here.”

Ms McCallum praised opponents for “really doing their homework” on the issue.

“We have Australian standards on nearly every other thing, I can’t believe we don’t have one on crematoriums,” she said.

The two also met with the Blackheath Transport Action Group to support its stance on heavy transport issues, as well as representatives from Save Our Springwood (SOS) who discussed options for the town’s revitalisation.

The proposed crematorium in Faulconbridge seems to be a totally inappropriate site to me. If one looks at the current Leura site and then look at what is proposed in Faulconbridge, this prososal does does not make any sense. Surely there must be a better site available for this one.

The site might well be inappropriate to everyone living in Faulconbridge. However, if the owner of the land has a legal zoning entitlement, with a use for a crematorium, and the Council has a valid application to deal with, an application that conforms legally to all the requirements under the legal town plan instrument, how can anyone suddenly change the law to disallow a consent to be issued?

Ralph's comments are interesting and no doubt correct. We shall just have to see who or what wins out in the long run.

Mr Henk Luf has revealed to all of us that the Blue Mountain City Council may have some real problems in its management performance plan, as revealed in the BMG reporting the issue of the Faulconbridge crematorium application. It seems to me that Councillors have problems in accepting new Capital Investment for Private/Business/Public requirement into the 21st Century. Having recently moved back to NSW, and having lived overseas, it seems to me that the elected Blue Mountain City Councillors must be encouraged by all local government voters to critically examine our current environmental/economic/planning policies, how they impact on everything else; working well or losing millions. Failing to do this investigation, will lead to ongoing bad decisions, that will continually cause the rates to blow out. Even if Councillors seek a 100% increase in rates they will not fix the real problem, because investors, especially Superannuation funds, undertaking risk management, will discover the risks. You only need to ask why millions in tourism are lost due to a question of policy. After all, none of us want the investments we make in our houses/ business to go into the negative, or do we?

Ralf's comments presuppose that the development application does in fact meet the legal and zoning requirements? If you read the DA you realise that the crematorium proposal has not been put in as a light industry as it is, but rather as a commercial/ refreshment room to try and fit with a village/ neighbourhood zone. I suggest you visit crematoriums sites around Sydney and see the difference in location then you will understand why residents dont want this facility across the road from our homes.

The word "presuppose" means to imply or take for granted in advance that something must happen. My comments, concerning the Crematorium development/building application on land situated in Faulconbridge was never taken as fact. This is a matter between the applicant on the one hand and our elected City Councillors on the other hand, and subject to a negotiated/applicants interpretation of planning laws, as gazetted by our NSW Parliament. Our elected Councillors are bound to vote (on our behalf) on this application. My concern is always with policy, its design and its implementation for the betterment of all of us in the Blue Mountains. I want to contribute in the ongoing debate to find better ways to keep our local/rate taxes at reasonable affordable levels and for our local economy to happily bubble along, so that we can continue to share a contented way of life. In the true Australian democratic tradition/process, I'm only to happy to debate my own valued positions concerning public policy with any voting fellow citizen. This includes debating with voters, who from time to time may be waiting to see in which way the political "Wind" is blowing, left, right or dead centre.

Perhaps we should put up a location sign for our visitors should this crematorium go ahead. Something along these lines perhaps? "Faulconbridge, not left, not right but dead centre of the Blue Mountains, in more ways than one.". Oh dear.

I wish you hadn't mentioned that "refreshment room" thing - it is giving me nightmares
