Basketball sensation Angus Brandt took time out of his hectic US schedule to train up-and-coming stars of the sport at Blaxland recently.
The former Blaxland High student signed to play with division one Oregon State College (Beavers) in the US last year, where he studies exercise and sports science, majoring in pre-therapy and allied health.
The 20-year-old spoke to about 65 keen under 13 players at a three-day clinic hosted by Springwood and District Basketball Association on July 7, and gave an impressive display of his skills on the court.
Children were given the opportunity to quiz Angus on everything from the highest amount of baskets he had ever scored in a game (answer: 32 points) to whether he had been on TV (“about 20 times in the US when I have been playing”).
A number of young players got to go head-to-head on the court with Angus and two even got a hand to slam dunk.
There was a huge line-up for autographs afterwards, where Angus signed everything from t-shirts and basketballs to legs and arms.
The clinic was organised by Springwood and District Basketball Association development officers Louise Gleeson and Matt Porter, who were very pleased with turn out for the event.
The association had seen the number of youngsters interested in getting involved in events boosted thanks to a successful six-week program in schools for primary school-age children, Louise said.
“It’s been really successful ... there’s been a really great response this time, partially because we have been in the schools which have responded really well,” she said.
Matt thanked all the volunteers involved in the program who gave up their time to help.
“A lot of youth league players and junior rep players came down to teach the kids,” he said.
Springwood and District Basketball Association runs a Saturday morning skills clinic for children five years and over on Saturday mornings, Monday night competitions for U12s and U16s, and a Tuesday competition for U14s.
