Hazelbrook’s Chris Delfsma together with Denis Pana has scored a top 10 finish in the first of two Commodore Cup 45 minute endurance races at Winton Raceway on Sunday.
Starting 21st on the grid, they climbed through the field to take the chequered flag in ninth position in race conditions that could only be described as atrocious.
Delfsma was elected to do the first half of the race and in the first six laps turned in a stunning performance as he charged to 11th position.
It had been raining steadily since before the start and despite the fact that it was still afternoon, it was more like dusk to the drivers, and given the conditions, safety car periods occurred as several drivers spun off.
When Delfsma pitted for the second time (after the mandatory wheel change the first time), he handed over to Pana for the run home.
Pana rejoined in 15th and picked up six places in the remaining 12 laps.
“The team made a couple of simple adjustments and that really transformed the car for these type of conditions,” gleamed Delfsma after the event.
“It was a great result for us — I am ecstatic!”
This was the first Blue Mountains outing in anything but a production car.
Delfsma usually races his Century 21 Ford Falcon BF XR8 in the Australian Manufacturers Championship for Production Cars. He has also competed in the Bathurst 12 Hour twice in that car before joining Wilson Brothers Racing for this year’s race, driving a Subaru Impreza WRX.
