Open to a challenge

03 Dec, 2008 01:48 PM
With Australian cricket going through a bad case of the wobbles in recent times, a Glenbrook schoolboy has picked the perfect time to make his representative charge.

Jordan Silk will travel to Perth in early January to test himself against the best young cricketers the country has to offer after being selected in the NSW U/17 side to compete at the National Championships.

The opening batsman made the cut after performing strongly for a City line-up against Country at the Bradman Oval in Bowral.

“I was stoked,” Jordan said about learning of his selection in the 13-man squad. “Just the opportunity to play for the City side was unreal but to be picked in this NSW side, it’s a bit surreal.”

While clearly honoured by the chance to represent his State, the ambitious Blaxland High School student sees the national carnival as an important stepping stone to higher honours.

As one of only two openers in the squad he is sure to get plenty of time in the middle to impress.

Along with all-important patience, Jordan identifies confidence as a vital cog in his ability to face up to the new ball.

“I know I can go out there and do a job for a team,” he said.

Having grown up idolising former Australian opener Michael Slater that self-belief is hardly surprising, though he claims his approach at the crease is more circumspect than the swashbuckling Slater.

Like Slater did throughout his career Jordan has a trusted coach he turns to for advice. Each week he puts in a session with Penrith head coach Michael Wholohan, an influence the 16-year-old said has “definitely motivated me to keep playing the game”.

Jordan doesn’t fear not being up to standard in Perth, a recent graduation to second grade for his club side Penrith has exposed him to high quality competition.

“It’s good tough cricket . . . and I love a challenge,” he said.

Rising through the ranks of the Sydney Grade competitions has also opened Jordan’s eyes to that very Australian tactic of the sledge. While he’s learned to ignore the inevitable attacks from opposition teams, the ferocious tirades have to be heard to be believed.

“It’s not really sledging, it’s almost abuse really.”

You get the impression that Jordan, who plans to wear the baggy green cap of Australia one day, is unlikely to let that get in the way of his dreams.
