More than $1200 was presented to Springwood Hospital following a recent fund-raiser in memory of a local musician.
Springwood’s Australasian Order of Old Bastards (AOOB) teamed up with local band the Smokin’ Willies to organise the barbecue and band day at the Royal Hotel to raise funds for the hospital’s palliative care unit.
The day was organised in memory of talented musician and AOOB member, Mick Duncan, who passed away at the hospital earlier this year.
AOOB and band members presented a cheque for $1275 to Springwood Hospital Auxiliary’s assistant secretary Grahame Hungerford on December 15.
“The contribution is not only materially useful but it is also an acknowledgement of the professionally outstanding care by the palliative care team at our great little public hospital,” Mr Hungerford said.
“It’s not only the money, raised by hard work from a generous community, but it’s also the spirit in which this donation is given.
“Being that time of year, it’s a wonderful Christmas present to an undeniably deserving cause.”
Band member Col Gentles thanked all those who donated their time on the day, including performers Jack Pledge, Lisa McNaughton, Sam McClain, Lucia Neville, Jack Perry, Brett Likewize Stevens, Scott Jones, Laura Zarb, the Smokin’ Willies members, and Jimmy Power.
An even bigger family-friendly event would be organised for January 19, the first anniversary of Mick’s death, he said.
“The day will be held to raise money for cancer research,” Mr Gentles said.
The fund-raiser will feature major raffles with prizes including State of Origin merchandise, a four-burner barbecue, meat trays and a children’s bike.
“It will be a family day at the Royal, kids are more than welcome and will be catered for,” Mr Gentles said.
