Moving home can be exciting but it can also present challenges — especially when you’re downsizing.
That’s the situation Springwood Neighbourhood Centre is facing after it recently relocated from large offices in Macquarie Road to smaller digs opposite Video Ezy in Springwood Avenue to make way for the redevelopment of the Springwood Civic Centre.
Operations co-ordinator Celia Lotus said the centre is doing its best to offer the same level of service under much different conditions in the old Integral Energy building.
With space at a premium, Ms Lotus would like to enclose the building’s verandah by installing custom-made blinds but a lack of funding is stifling the plans. She said the project would cost about $7000 but the value to the community in the extra space would be immeasurable.
“It would make it so much warmer and more inviting,” she said.
“We are trying to encourage the community to come back to the centre. In a sense it feels like they’ve lost a service [with the move].”
The neighbourhood centre has gone out of its way to offer the same services in its new location but has been forced to move some classes. Its fitness classes are now run from LKM Dance Studios in Macquarie Road.
The centre still offers photocopying, fax, scanning and laminating services, baby change and disabled toilet access, free wifi, computers, community notice boards and a friendly drop-in space with daily newspapers and coffee and tea facilities.
The centre also co-ordinates an out of school hours child care service and visitor programs plus a range of fitness and computer classes plus arts and crafts and carer support groups.
