A wet track added to the fun of Springwood Public School’s annual Billy Cart Derby on April 11 with lots of thrills, the odd spill and plenty of skill on show.
Principal Mehmet Mehmet said the billy cart derby was a favourite annual event of the students and was in its 15th year.
“It’s become a real tradition to end term one now and it’s all about having fun — it is not competitive at all.
“Many parents and grandparents come to watch and even the teachers have their own race, pushed by the students.
“The kids always come up with very creative designs and put a lot of work into it.
“Last year we had a cart that looked like a coffin and had a hand sticking out of it.
“This time I noticed lots of superhero-inspired carts.”
Mr Mehmet said some kids were already thinking about what type of cart they would create for next year’s derby.
“It’s 12 months in the making for a lot of them — they’ll probably start on their next cart tomorrow!”
