Louise Markus, federal member for Macquarie, welcomed the Prime Minister, Tony Abbott and Pollie Pedal riders to Katoomba for the final leg of their 2014 trip on Sunday.
Despite wet weather, the Prime Minister joined the ranks of cyclists pedalling a long haul to raise money chiefly for Carers Australia.
This year the ride took place from August 10-17, beginning in Moree and ending 1000 kilometres later in Penrith.
The Prime Minister said Pollie Pedal had been a very important part of his public life for 17 years.
A physically demanding ride for charity, attracting the participation and support of politicians and enthusiasts, Pollie Pedal has raised over $3 million. The funds raised this year will greatly assist Carers Australia in raising awareness of the 2.7 million carers working in Australia, and promote their work and care initiative seeking to improve provision for carers and facilitate their transition into further employment.
"It was fantastic to see Pollie Pedal riders at Katoomba, led by the Prime Minister, to support Carers Australia," Mrs Markus said.
"On the wet and cold morning, we also had the pleasure of being joined by Aunty Sharyn Halls who welcomed the Prime Minister and riders to the iconic and beautiful Echo Point."
The Prime Minister has participated in Pollie Pedal every year since he co-founded it in 1998. The response to the MH17 tragedy and other international events prevented him from joining the ride during the week, but he was pleased to return for the final two days.
"We were delighted to have the Prime Minister join us once again, despite a busy week, and share in this great event in our electorate of Macquarie," Mrs Markus said.
