The garage and backyard of Kevin Cunningham's Falkland Close home in Winmalee is a hive of activity most weeknights, drawing a growing number of inexperienced but keen boxers aged between eight and 25 to training sessions under the watchful eye of former head boxing coach of Penrith's Police and Citizens Youth Club, David Delfino.

It was cold and drizzling when the Gazette visited the club last Wednesday night, but more than a dozen boys were happily doing warm-up drills outside with gloves and pads, inspired by the success of older colleagues Jake Tippet-Moore (16) and Hamish Cunningham (15) from Winmalee who'd returned from the 2014 Golden Gloves boxing tournament in Brisbane the week before wearing gold.

Club members Darryl Dizon (20) from Whalan and Lougene Mahfoud (20) from Emu Plains also competed in the four-day tournament that attracted more than 430 entrants from every Australian state and as far as New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, but lost by points decision against much more experienced opponents.
