Safer streets for Macquarie. That's the cry of the Federal member for Macquarie, Louise Markus, who was pleased to announce the successful delivery of closed-circuit television (CCTV) funding to Wentworth Falls Chamber of Commerce last week.
Two weeks ago the federal government announced the Blue Mountains would receive $360,000 funding for the installation of CCTV cameras at a number of Mountains locations. Last week, the first instalment of funds was delivered.
"The federal government is committed to making streets safer in the electorate of Macquarie through the installation of CCTVs," Mrs Markus said, "They have been promised, and now they are being delivered."
The Attorney-General's department signed the funding agreement with the chamber for the transfer of the first instalment of funds for Station Street on September 3.
Mrs Markus met with the chamber president Lew Hird, vice president and treasurer Bill McCabe and secretary Bruce Christmas at the pedestrian strip on Station Street to offer her congratulations.
Mrs Markus said the community's small business strip will benefit from increased road safety with the installation of the cameras.
Mr Hird said the installation of the cameras in the village would "enhance the safety of residents and tourists alike and significantly reduce the incidence of vandalism".
Mrs Markus is pleased the Coalition's safer streets communities grants program will see an investment of $150,000 towards the safety of local streets in Wentworth Falls.
"This will target local crime hotspots in particular, through the installation of CCTVs and better lighting."
"This is the first of the instalments to come that will deliver on the Coalition's promise for safer roads in our community," Mrs Markus said.
