Swedish furniture giant Ikea has issued an urgent recall for a defective children's swing that may break and cause serious injury, its fourth product safety recall of a dangerous children's product this year.
Ikea announced the worldwide recall of about 23,000 Gunggung indoor and outdoor swings after reports of the suspension fittings failing, which in one case led to a eight-year-old child falling and breaking a leg.
"Ikea has received reports of incidents showing that the suspension fittings do not live up to our quality requirements, posing a risk of serious injury," the recall notice said.
The company said four cases of the suspension fittings breaking had been reported worldwide and that in two of the incidents the children required medical attention.
Customers are advised to immediately stop using the swings, which were sold in Australia between March and August 2014, and return them to the store for a refund.
This is the latest in a string of recalls of hazardous children's products recently announced by Ikea.
Earlier this year the furniture maker warned customers about a range of bed canopies that pose a strangulation risk to young children.
Eight models of the bed canopies, which are designed to drape over a cot or child's bed, were recalled after reports of the net being entangled arounds the necks of 11 infants and young children.
An Ikea spokeswoman said at the time that no "permanent injury" had been reported, but that it pulled the range from shelves after the safety threat was identified. Ikea sold more than 2.8 million of the canopies since 1996.
This year Ikea extended an earlier recall of children's wall mounted lamps after a 16-month-old child died after becoming entangled in a lamp cord and also warned customers about two children's bed frames that may break, exposing sharp metal edges that could cause a laceration.
