If you love reading you can usually spell well. At least that's what Flynn Weston has discovered.
The 10-year-old from Wentworth Falls Public School (pictured) has made it to the state final of the Premier's Spelling Bee to be held in Sydney on November 5.
Flynn won the regional final last month, correctly spelling words like cardinal, grotesque and submarine, to take out the junior division.
He has a list of 500 words to practise in preparation for the competition, which he works his way through daily.
"There are tricks in a word," Flynn explained. "I divide it into syllables or I memorise them."
Flynn is the classroom and family's walking dictionary. If she's ever unsure of a word, mum Anne Rosee need only ask Flynn.
When he's not practising his words, Flynn has his nose buried in a book. He's enjoying Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson novels and likes drawing as well.
When he grows up he wants to be an author and illustrator or a Lego designer. Flynn's hoping he wins the state final, because if he does, his parents have promised him a new Lego set.
Eighty-four students from across the state will compete for the title, and more than 3500 students from 920 public schools across NSW competed in the regional final.
