Licensed builder Jim Carothers has nominated as an independent candidate for Ward 1 in the November 15 council by-election. Mr Carothers has lived in Katoomba since 1979, building "half a dozen houses" and renovating "every third house in Katoomba", raising two daughters along the way.
With two grandchildren now living in Katoomba he will keep council's focus on family-friendly facilities including the long-term goal of a bicycle track from Lapstone to Mount York.
He also aims to have green waste bins for households, recycling stations in busy areas alongside council's permanent garbage bins, and an accelerated program to seal the backlog of council footpaths.
"I'm eager to be involved in politics. With my strong work ethic I'm sure I can make a lasting contribution to our community," he said.
An active volunteer, Mr Carothers has had an 11-year involvement with the Blue Mountains Music Festival, heading the crew that keeps the infrastructure in good working order and with an eye to continual improvement.
Mr Carothers has also been a member of the Blue Mountains SES for five years, and has been the Katoomba Rescue Officer for the last three.
"Though I'm running as an independent, I am not a loner by any stretch of the imagination. Having run my own business taught me how to bring out the best in people as well as the value of being a team player. I look forward to representing the electors of Ward 1 regardless of their politics or personal circumstances."
