A seven-year-old boy was reportedly chasing a basketball when he ran on to Victoria Road on Tuesday afternoon and was struck by a taxi.
The boy was flown to hospital in a serious condition after the incident about 5.30pm, on the corner of Edwin Street in Drummoyne.
Witnesses told police they saw the boy run into the citybound bus lane while chasing a ball, into the path of the taxi.
It remains unclear if the boy was in the company of other people.
Police said the boy was playing with the ball in a narrow laneway shortly before the incident occured.
Police closed Victoria Road in both directions, but shortly after 8pm, all lanes were reopened.
CareFlight said the boy was taken to nearby Brett Park, where its helicopter took him to Westmead Children's Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
It is understood the boy lives nearby to where the accident occured as his parents own a business in the local area.
