An adventurer who paddled his kayak almost 20,000km, going right around Australia has been named the Australian Geographic Society Adventurer of the Year. He is the first person to circumnavigate all of Australia's states and territories by kayak. Kayaking around Australia was "a fantasy idea" and now he will spend some time planning the next one.

Wind, waves, salt sores, sharks, crocs and sleepless nights were all part of the journey for Katoomba adventure seeker Jason Beachcroft. He became the first person to kayak around Australia, incorporating Tasmania into the route. He has won the top adventuring gong for his efforts.

"The time had come to put my paddle in the water and undertake a great adventure" he said of his feat. The 20kg, five-metre carbon fibre sea kayak which was his home for 17 months at sea.
