The bed is a comfortable place of rest but it could be cosier.
We know that a two-minute stretch before bed helps reduce tension for a good night's sleep. And posture can improve our slumber. But the National Sleep Foundation also suggests a comfortable mattress and pillow, and making the room "attractive and inviting" for sleep.
Follow these 10 steps for your most comfortable bed yet.
Thread count
Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric and is often used to measure quality, but it's not the only thing you should look for in a cosy sheet.
Joanna Goodman, owner of Au Lit Fine Linens, told Style at Home that the three things to look for are: "If it's Egyptian cotton, where it's woven and, lastly, the thread count." Goodman says when buying sheets, make sure the label says 100 per cent Egyptian cotton and look for a minimum of 200 thread count.
Tuck your sheets in
There's nothing worse than having your sheets and blankets twist around during the night. So make like a hotel and tuck them in. Martha Stewart will show you how.
Choose a fluffy doona
From natural fillings, such as pure wool, duck and goose feather, to down and synthetics, it's hard to know what one to choose. It comes down to how warm you want to be and if you have any allergies. If you're allergic to feathers choose natural fillers that are marked "allergy free", as they tend to be lighter and more breathable, whereas a feather and down-filled doona will provide more warmth.
Choose a pillow wisely
There is such a thing as having a cushion problem but this doesn't apply to pillows.
Similar to the doona, we're spoiled for choice when it comes to fillings. If you like to feel cuddled, a feather or down pillow might be nice, but be careful the ends of the feathers don't poke you in the face. There's also memory foam, polyester and an array of other natural options.
When it comes to size, Houzz said, "An oversized pillow can feel enveloping and cosy on a smaller bed." But softness depends on how full your pillow is stuffed.
Give your bed a scent
Smell your way to a better night sleep. The National Sleep Foundation said certain smells can affect your sleep, with lavender being "shown to decrease heart rate and blood pressure, potentially putting you in a more relaxed state."
Bring a scent to your room using oils and candles or add some essential oils to baking soda. Massage the baking soda into the mattress and leave for an hour. Vacuum and enjoy the new smell of your mattress.
Top off your mattress
Once you've selected your pillows and doona, finish off with a mattress cover. These days, mattress covers do it all - mostprotect against allergens and dust mites but you can also find covers that are waterproof and stain resistant. Most importantly they offer a springy, soft and fluffy layer for you to sink into at the end of each day.
