Film critic and broadcaster David Stratton is among the Blue Mountains residents featured in Australia Day honours announced today (January 26).

The Leura resident was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his "significant service to the film industry", as well as his efforts as an ambassador for Australian cinema.

"I'm very honoured and surprised and gratified," he told the Gazette.

Woodford residents, Professors John and Rosalind Croucher, were both appointed Members of the Order of Australia (AM) for their distinguished academic careers.

John Croucher's honour is in recognition of his service to mathematical science in the field of statistics and for his work as an academic, author and mentor.

Rosalind Croucher's Australia Day honour is for her significant service to the law as an academic, to legal reform and education, to professional development and to the arts.

Mt Riverview resident Anita Anderson was awarded a Public Service Medal for outstanding public service to social justice, worker's compensation, and improved access to government services in regional NSW.

Linden resident Chris Presland was also awarded a Public Service Medal for "outstanding public service in education in New South Wales, particularly through leadership roles, to improved professional standards and certification, and to student performance".

Refugee advocate Dr Graeme Douglas Swincer, 73, of Faulconbridge, was recognised for more than four decades of service to the community through humanitarian support organisations. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

Full coverage of the Australia Day honours will feature in Wednesday's Blue Mountains Gazette.
