Labor candidate for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle has called on the state government to guarantee RMS services in Springwood following uncertainty over the future of the town's motor registry.
Documents obtained by the Gazette show the state government wants to extend its lease on the motor registry building in Raymond Road for just seven months, prompting fears the service could be closed or relocated.
Ms Doyle said the government needs to be up front about the future of the motor registry.
"I would go so far as to demand our Springwood RMS office remains as either a standalone Service NSW office or be part of the new council Springwood customer centre in the civic centre," she said.
The government has rolled out 18 Service NSW centres across the state since 2013, putting a range of government agencies - including the RMS - under one roof.
But the Blue Mountains isn't included on the list of planned new Service NSW centres for 2015 with the nearest centre located in Penrith.
However, a Service NSW spokesperson flagged a future "presence" at Springwood - although this could be up to three years away.
"The Springwood Motor Registry will continue to deliver Roads and Maritime transactions," said the spokesperson.
"The government has tasked Service NSW to design the future network to best meet customer needs and value for money. As part of this roll out Service NSW can confirm there will be a presence at Springwood which will deliver expanded government transactions.
"The roll out of Service NSW including one-stop shops is expected to take around three years."
Ms Doyle said she feared the short-term extension of the Springwood motor registry lease was aimed at neutralising the issue until after the March state election.
"If they are applying a Band-Aid so it doesn't become an election issue I think people will be really quite cranky," she said.
Any reduction in local RMS services would also hit jobs, she said.
"Important local jobs will be impacted as a result of a minor extension to a lease," she said.
"What will happen to our locals and their jobs if there isn't any plan into the future [for the Springwood motor registry]?"
Blue Mountains MP Roza Sage said she has lobbied for Springwood's motor registry to be upgraded to a Service NSW Service Centre although she stopped short of guaranteeing this outcome.
"I am strongly of the opinion these services should remain available within our community and will continue to make that clear to my NSW Government colleagues," she said.
"I have already advocated that the government consider upgrading the Springwood Motor Registry to a Service NSW Service Centre."
