The Sydney Sixers will head into Wednesday night's T20 Big Bash final against the Perth Scorchers at Manuka Oval in Canberra bursting with confidence - and Glenbrook-raised batsman Jordan Silk has a lot to do with that.
The 22-year-old has flourished with the bat in the second half of this season, becoming the highest scorer in the competition of anyone batting at number five and the second highest scorer overall.
When the Sixers looked down and out in the local derby against the Sydney Thunder in front of 36,487 fans at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 22, Silk blasted an unbeaten 69 - including 43 off his last 13 balls - to steal victory from defeat.
Just hours before, when the Thunder's innings was building up nicely, Silk took a screamer of a catch to dismiss Chris Green that rivalled his effort last season when he took a one-hander at full stretch to remove Craig Kieswetter at the Gabba.
Regarded by former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as one of the best fielders in the country, Silk sprinted from the boundary to just outside the 30-metre circle, dived with both hands outstretched and managed to snatch the ball with his right hand, just millimetres above the grass.
It was a mammoth effort that drew commentator Mark Waugh to say "that's better than last year's, I'm telling you - that was an amazing catch."
After beating the Thunder with two balls to spare, the Sixers comfortably won their semi-final against the Adelaide Strikers by 87 runs in front of 52,633 fans at the Adelaide Oval - the biggest ever domestic cricket crowd.
In more good news for Silk, who opens the batting for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield competition, he signed a new contract to play with the Sydney Sixers for the next three Big Bash League seasons.
He also plans to play more games for his local grade cricket club, Penrith, this season before the second half of the Sheffield Shield competition resumes again on February 24.
