There were plenty of tomatoes, carrots, celery sticks and cucumbers at Winmalee Public School on February 26, plus a giant super hero-like champion of the vegetable world - Captain Capsicum.
It was all part of the official statewide school launch of a Healthy Children's Network Facebook page.
An initiative of NSW Health, the online healthy eating resource aims to provide information to parents, carers, grandparents, teachers and anyone else who works with children about healthy eating and physical activity, as well as reducing screen time for kids aged 12 and under.
Health promotion officer Carla Piliskic talked to the students during the launch about the importance of healthy eating and provided some practical and simple healthy eating tips that could be easily applied to school lunches.
"They loved Captain Capsicum and trying the fruit and vege cups, especially the juicy tomatoes," Miss Piliskic said.
"We launched the program's Facebook site on February 16, but it was very exciting being able to do the physical launch of it here at Winmalee Public School and interact with the kids and their parents.
"Childhood obesity is a priority health issue.
"We want to promote healthy habits in a fun way through games and activities, provide parents and carers with useful information, strategies and support to engage children and help them to learn healthy habits from an early age."
The Healthy Children's Network Facebook page not only features information about healthy eating, but also offers opportunities for everyone to share information and network while also providing plenty of healthy recipes, competitions, giveaways and fun game ideas.
