Three candidates for Blue Mountains running in the March 28 state election will face off in a debate highlighting their policy differences at the Wentworth School of Arts theatre on Sunday, March 15 from 2.30-4.30pm.
Hosted by the Blue Mountains Toastmasters Club (BMTC), the debate will provide a rare opportunity for residents to hear what the different candidates have to say and to question them on their policies. Entry to the debate is free.
It will be moderated by Peter Walker, a former journalist and president of BMTC. Sitting member Roza Sage (Liberal) will debate with Trish Doyle (Labor) and Alandra Tasire (Greens).
The meeting will begin with each candidate providing a five minute opening statement followed by a discussion session about three yet to be determined topics, ending with closing statements and questions from the floor.
Mr Walker expects the debate will touch on many important issues of local concern.
"These would include jobs and growth, the environment, public transport, health, roads and education," he said.
"This form of debate allows the candidates plenty of opportunity to promote their policies without the aggressiveness of the more familiar debating format.
"Mind you, I fully expect candidates to take whatever chance they get to point out what they consider to be the weaknesses in the policies of others."
BMTC members will introduce the candidates and refreshments will be available.
"Being a Toastmaster is all about public speaking, how to make a good structured speech and learning how to think on your feet, as this debate will highlight.
"The whole purpose of Toastmasters is to help people make better presentations or speeches, whether it be in a work environment or in social activities."
BMTC meets at the Carrington Hotel in Katoomba at 7.30pm on every second and fourth Monday of the month. Visitors are most welcome.
