The highlight of performing with Canberra Youth Theatre was:
Having the opportunity to work interstate and in overseas, and building pathways with other passionate and exciting young artists. There's a great community of practitioners who love their work as much as they love each other. Finding new ways to work together is the best thing in the world.
The best thing I learned about theatre in Canberra was:
Build it and they will come. Sometimes you can't wait for opportunities to come along; be unafraid to chase them and develop the skills to build your own. You have everything you need within you and around you to take on any challenges you'll face.
My play Bona Mors is:
An exploration of how children understand and deal with death. It's an invitation for audiences to address it; children know about death. They just don't know how to talk about or deal with it, because neither do we!
My early impressions of Hollywood are:
A city where timing is important, and self-awareness is important. It's a place that both demands and respects hard work. Hollywood's unpredictable, but not unkind. You definitely get out what you put in. It's important to have strong goals in mind, I think; it would be easy to get lost in being unsure of what you want in such a big place.
My advice for other young actors is:
Get to know your instincts and trust them. Stop selling yourself short; we are all capable of more than we think! I'm a firm believer in actors backing themselves and backing each other. It's easy to get caught up comparing yourself to others and treating the job like a competition, but that serves nobody. The best work and the best relationships come out of celebrating each other and pushing each other to learn. It doesn't have to be a lonely profession.
My career ambition is to:
Have a platform to tell stories that excite and challenge equally, and use that platform in as many interesting ways as possible. Fiction is a huge part of how we understand the world around us, and I want to continue to be a part of that process.
