Blue Mountains Liberal MP Roza Sage described them as an "absolute disgrace" but the man who made the comments said she "needs to develop a sense of humour".
Either way, NSW opposition leader Luke Foley found himself dragged into a minor political storm today after joking about the premier's campaign bus being vandalised in Katoomba earlier this month.
Speaking about the vandalism on WSFM's Jonesy and Amanda Breakfast Show, Mr Foley said: "Fancy leaving your bus out overnight in Katoomba, unguarded. You're asking for trouble. I'm surprised there was still wheels."
When Mr Foley was jokingly asked by announcer Brendan Jones if he was responsible for the vandalism, he replied: "No, the good youth of north Katoomba I think."
Mrs Sage said the opposition leader's comments were both offensive and inaccurate.
"This is an absolute disgrace that the man who wants to lead this state thinks it is okay to speak like this about my community," she said.
"NSW Labor did nothing but pay lip service to the Blue Mountains for 16 years and it is clear they haven't learned their lesson.
"Now it seems we are nothing but an object for ridicule by Mr Foley. Tourism is the lifeblood of this community yet Mr Foley seems determined to drive visitors away."
But Mr Foley said the Blue Mountains MP "needs to develop a sense of humour".
“I just made the point with Jonesy and Amanda this morning that whether its Mike Baird’s bus or my bus, if it's left overnight in Katoomba or indeed anywhere in this state unguarded, our people have such healthy views towards their politicians that they might touch up both of our buses.”
Mrs Sage said she didn't find it a laughing matter. She said crime in the Blue Mountains is "stable or down across the key indicators with malicious damage to property down 15.2 per cent".
"This is a proud and welcoming community that does not take kindly to these types of offensive comments."
Labor candidate for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle welcomed Mr Foley's comments after the radio interview.
"I'm glad Luke clarified his attempt at so-called humour, which bears no resemblance to the Katoomba I know and love," she said.
"Katoomba residents are probably more angry however that trains were cancelled last night on the Blue Mountains line because of yet another breakdown caused by the Liberals' cuts to maintenance crews."
