Did you have a terrific lunch last Wednesday?
Students at Springwood Public School sure did.
They worked together to make delicious entries in their school's Super Sensational Sandwich Competition - an initiative of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution.
The sandwich judging panel consisted of principal Mehmet Mehmet, Penrith Panthers player Kevin Kingston, Panthers' head chef Tim Wesley and teacher Louise Tucker.
Kingston said the sandwiches were delicious, very healthy "and not too dissimilar to the food us Panthers players eat for lunch.
"I liked the one with haloumi in it - we don't get to eat that too much."
The event's organiser, class 2E teacher Haylie Excell, said the day tied in well with the school's green garden program's objectives and the students had been looking forward to it for weeks.
"The senior students had worked in groups during class to design their own healthy sandwich recipes and then voted on which recipe to use for the competition, while the junior students worked together to learn and create a recipe selected by their teacher," Miss Excell said.
Year 1Y teacher Rachael Younan - whose class made a tasty wholemeal chicken and salad sandwich with mayonnaise and garlic aioli dressing - said the kids were so excited, "they were buzzing".
Principal Mehmet said the teachers put a lot of thought into it "and the students absolutely embraced it."
For the record, class 5/6W came first with their Super Salubrious Salivator Sandwich (soy chicken, swiss cheese, caramelised onion, avocado and baby spinach on toasted pane di casa).
And the school's chooks enjoyed any leftover scraps.
