The football fields, netball courts, clubhouse, canteen block and car park at Summerhayes Park were made off limits to the public on June 16 after a council contractor spotted defective and potentially unstable light towers.
A council spokeswoman confirmed the grounds were closed and notices and barriers put in place. Further inspections by a structural engineer revealed five poles were deemed sufficiently damaged to require urgent removal.
The tennis courts area remains open.
Some of the poles in the park showed signs of corrosion on their base plates, including one where the base was visible above soil level.
"The problem occurs as a result of the way older poles are mounted, bringing the metal into permanent contact with water," the spokeswoman said.
"Newer poles are mounted in such a way that this does not occur.
"The light poles tagged for removal are well over 20 years old."
Council is seeking further advice on whether three other poles require repairs or also need to be replaced.
Only five poles in the park were assessed as being in sound condition, requiring no action.
It was hoped that all poles deemed unsafe could be removed this week or next to allow the grounds to be reopened at least for daytime use, but the timing depends on the weather.
As for replacing the poles - that will take some time.
"Council needs to ensure that any new infrastructure meets the current Australian standards," the council spokeswoman said.
"Council staff have begun to prepare a brief for a lighting designer and . . . intend to work with the community clubs.
"Once a design has been completed, council can then undertake the process to supply and install the required infrastructure - it will not be completed prior to the end of the winter season."
Springwood United Football Club's president of football Sean Leehy posted on the club's Facebook site the park's temporary closure will have an impact on the club's ability to conduct football activities and members' patience is appreciated.
"Information has been distributed to coaches and managers regarding the use of alternate training venues," Mr Leehy said.
"The committee will keep members up to date regarding any alternate arrangements put in place whilst Summerhayes Park is closed."
Most match fixtures were called off last weekend in any case due to the wet weather.
