Motorists can now use the Great Western Highway between Mt Victoria and Katoomba.
But the Live Traffic NSW website is warning motorists to exercise caution as there is still snow and ice in the area.
Motorists traveling in both directions on the highway are still being advised to delay travel where possible, to take care when driving on icy roads, and also allow additional travel time and expect delays, as tow trucks continue to remove cars abandoned overnight and this morning.
Alpine conditions are still in place in the Upper Mountains this afternoon with villages including Katoomba and beyond still resembling a ski resort.
Scores of students have stayed home from school to play in the biggest snowfall in decades.
Snowfall totals were about 10-15 centimetres for the Blue Mountains towns of Katoomba and Wentworth Falls, and similar falls for Orange and Oberon, Anthony Duke, a meteorologist with Weatherzone, said.
Passengers travelling on the Blue Mountains train line are advised to allow extra travel time due to the extreme weather conditions. The 4.35pm Central to Mount Victoria train has been cancelled. Other services are running, but some will operate as four carriage trains instead of eight. Passengers are being advised to listen to announcements and check indicator boards.
Some sporting groups have already started canceling fixtures for tomorrow, with Wentworth Falls Football Club for one, alerting teams via text messages and email that games are off with Pitt Park shut.
