It's best to take life one step at a time but five Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters from Glenbrook will be climbing 1504 steps to the top of Sydney Tower in less than half an hour on October 4.
And they'll be wearing 20kg of firefighting gear while doing so.
It's for a great cause, with all money raised going towards Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research.
Forming a team called 301 Mountains Goats, retained firefighters Jesse Grant, Brendon Roberts, Aliysa Gibbons, Ben Lane and Cassandra Maxwell will join Fire and Rescue NSW colleagues from across the state in the Firefighters Climb for MND - an annual event where every dollar raised goes to the Macquarie University MND Research Centre.
MND is a cause close to Mr Grant's heart, having lost a member of his family to the disease, which rapidly breaks down nerve cells that control the muscles that enable movement, speech, breathing and swallowing.
"I was only 13 when my grandad, Colin, was diagnosed with MND at age 58," Mr Grant said.
"I remember he was a big, strong guy, more than six-foot tall and very active, but the disease put him into a wheelchair in just six months and he passed away before he turned 60.
"Fifty per cent of people diagnosed with MND die within 15 months and the rest within two years.
"It's why when I heard about the Firefighers Climb for MND event, I signed up for it straight away."
It didn't take long for his colleagues at Glenbrook fire station to sign up as well and form the team.
Mr Lane admits he committed before really thinking too much about the physical demands involved, but said he and his teammates will definitely be up to the task.
"We've started training at Knapsack Reserve which has 104 steps to climb and we'll build that up in the next couple of weeks, because Sydney Tower has 15 times that number of steps," Mr Lane said.
"We'll have to pace ourselves - and yell at each other not to stop.
"It will certainly be a challenge, but it fails in comparison to the daily challenges faced by those with MND."
So far the team has raised more than $4000 and hopes to double that amount by October 4. To make a donation visit: https://firiesmnd.everydayhero.com/au/301-mountain-goats.
