Two motorists are lucky to be alive following a serious car accident that blocked traffic on Hawkesbury Road for almost five hours on Saturday.
Police said two cars collided near the Springwood golf club entrance on Hawkesbury Road about 5am. The drivers of both vehicles were taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment of serious injuries. They were in a stable condition and are expected to make a full recovery.
The road was closed in both directions for almost five hours, with road blocks set up, to allow crash investigators to do their work.
Long traffic delays resulted, as police said there were no options available to arrange any detours. The road was reopened at 9.45am.
Police are continuing their investigations into the cause of the accident.
The incident was the third major crash on Hawkesbury Road between Springwood and Hawkesbury Heights in August. The other two were single-vehicle accidents.
