It's the "holy grail" for pie makers to be awarded the honour of the best gourmet pie in the country and this year it has been won by Mountain High Pies at Wentworth Falls.
Damian Smith's awesome creation combines everything you might want in a big breakfast into a pie.
So it's a mixture of sausage, home-made baked beans, chorizo and bacon topped with mashed potato and finished with a poached egg dripping in hollandaise sauce.
It's incredibly rich and filling, as the Gazette can personally vouch.
Mr Smith's brekkie pie also took out awards for the most innovative pie and the best brekkie pie in the 26th Official Great Aussie Pie competition.
His products also won gold medals for a sausage roll, a gluten-free lamb and rosemary pie and a veggie brunch pie. He collected silver for a mince pie and the matador beef pie; and bronze for his chunky pie, seafood pie and apple pie.
"We're very excited about it," Mr Smith said. "The gold medals we thought we had a good chance but winning Australia's best gourmet ... it's a bit of a holy grail for the pie industry and we've got it."
The awards are run annually by the Australian Pie Council. Entrants either send their pies by courier or hand deliver them. Two pies go onto the main table plates for the cold judging and one pie goes into the pie warmer for tasting.
Manager of the competition, Danielle Lindsay, who happens to come from Glenbrook, said pies come from across the country.
"We get 1500 entries. This year the furthest came from Darwin, and from Esperance, Denmark and Pinjarra in Western Australia."
The judging takes place over four days.
"If the pies/sausage rolls score high enough they may qualify for a gold (exceptional), silver (above average) or bronze (industry standard) certificate," Ms Lindsay said.
"At the end of the judging we then look at each category to see what scored the highest mark for the overall win. Mountain High Pies were clear winners in each of their categories."
At the Wentworth Falls shop on Friday, Mr Smith didn't have time to bask in the glory - with school holidays on, the shop was full.
He said the brekkie pie was popular.
"Particularly on weekends, it's a talking point. It's certainly been a bit of a winner."
