Former Blue Mountains resident Noni Hazlehurst will star in a one-woman play in The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre’s 2016 season.
Mother is the newest work from the playwright Daniel Keene and will come to The Joan on October 7 and 8.
From Bette Midler to Patsy Cline, stand-up comedy to operatic heights and tea rituals to deep sea exploration, The Joan’s 2016 season is not-to-be-missed.
Along with Hazlehurst, it will feature a cracking bunch of talented artists, including Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Richard Gill, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and the razor-sharp Sydney Theatre Company funsters, who will be back for more mayhem with the Wharf Revue.
The year kicks off on a high note with The Divine Miss Bette on January 22. Bawdy, brash and just as irreverent as the original, the show’s star and creator Catherine Alcorn was trained by the man who discovered Bette Midler.
February is a special month for The Joan as it sees the world premiere of one of its very own works – made by The Q – Teacup in a Storm (February 25-27). Based on the incredible stories of carers, Teacup in a Storm brings together the dynamic local circus-maker, carer, teacher and artist Therese Cook, with acclaimed writer Noelle Janaczewska and emerging performer Marie Chanel, under the direction of award-winning artist Nick Atkins.
Audiences will be taken on a choral roller-coaster ride on March 13 when Richard Gill leads the Sydney Chamber Choir.
The beautiful sounds continue on April 16 when The Joan welcomes the “Angel of Australia”, Mirusia, who gained worldwide fame as the featured soprano soloist with Andre Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra.
On May 17 some of the world’s best comedians will be in town once again for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow. Other productions in the 2016 season include The Wharf Revue, and the musical Always…Patsy Cline.
Finishing off the season on November 19 will be two of Australia’s very best opera stars – Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Greta Bradman.
