“It was beautiful. It was very up-market in those days to have your reception at the Paragon.”
Bonnie Mergan remembers the April, 1955 day very well. She and her husband, John, tied the knot in St Canice’s and then went up Katoomba Street to the Paragon, which not only provided the catering but also created a lovely two-tier cake.
The Mergans were one of hundreds of couples who held their reception at the historic cafe, which turns 100 next year. In honour of the occasion, the Friends of the Paragon are producing a book telling its history and are hoping to hear from other brides and grooms.
The book’s author, Patsy Hollis, said she was interested in all sorts of reminiscences about the cafe.
“Did you work there? Or do you remember going to the Paragon as a child? As a young couple? Taking along your own children?”
All contributions will be welcome, Ms Hollis said.
The Paragon has a book to record your details or email Robyn Parker at robynp@iinet.com.au or Ms Hollis at patsy@cobbers.com.
On April 18 this year, the Mergans returned to the Paragon to celebrate their 60th anniversary. This time they came with family including five children, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild – nine-month-old Brayden “who was passed around like a little parcel, smiling and happy,” said Bonnie Mergan.
