Blue Mountains City Council is advising property owners about changes to the waste service which will start in July 2016.
Households will be supplied with the new standard waste service unless the property owner selects to pay for an alternative bin size. The new standard waste service will include a 140 litre garbage bin collected weekly, a 240 litre recycling bin collected fortnightly, and a 240 litre green bin collected fortnightly.
“The standard service is based on extensive research and community consultation. It will help most residents to increase recycling and reduce waste to landfill,” said Blue Mountains mayor, Mark Greenhill.
Property owners who want an alternative bin size need to return a council form by December 28. Estimated costs for the alternative bin sizes are provided in a letter to property owners, although the final costs are yet to be adopted.
Only property owners who wish to select an alternative bin size need to return the form. Owners of a property with a tenant are encouraged to consider the needs of the tenant.
“Garden and vegetation waste accounts for over 30 per cent of household waste, which can soon be recycled instead of going to landfill,” said the mayor.
“The new green bin service will see 4000 tonnes of organic waste being recycled each year.”
