Katoomba’s Anzac Day march is back on after the RSL was forced to cancel the event due to a steep hike in traffic management fees by the Roads and Maritime Service.
But Blue Mountains City Council stepped in on Tuesday night (March 29) to subsidise costs across the Mountains by $12,000 so the march can go ahead.
“After a gratefully received display of generosity and community spirit from Blue Mountains City Council, Katoomba’s ANZAC Day march is back in business,” the RSL sub-branch said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.
“We are delighted that council has extended us this lifeline so the march can proceed, and the long tradition can continue in Katoomba,” said Brigitte Moseley, the sub-branch president.
“We have had a deafening silence from all other levels of government since we raised this issue with them, but the council has come through for us just in time.”
The RMS imposed stricter traffic guidelines this year, which would have cost the Katoomba RSL sub-branch $1700, money it believed could be put to better use helping homeless veterans.
The council has agreed to work with local ex-services organisations over the next year to find a sustainable solution to the problem.
The march will assemble as at Carrington Place and step off at 11am, for the march down the main street to the Community War Memorial at the Katoomba RSL Club.
