The recent blooming of Katoomba Street is set to continue as the Katoomba Chamber of Commerce and rolls on from barrel planters to garden beds.
Over the summer, the chamber purchased the colourful annuals and perennials now planted in twenty-four wine barrels that stretch down both sides of the street.
Mark Jarvis, chamber president and general manager of the Carrington Hotel, said, “Tourist towns around the world use flowers to beautify their streets and create an air of festivity. The chamber decided to do what we could for Katoomba.”
Shopkeepers and the St Hilda’s Church congregation had happily accepted responsibility for watering the barrels outside their premises and some had taken the initiative with planting.
“Lui Friscioni and Louise Florence of Heart of Stone have created a fantastic display outside their shop. They are part of the chamber’s volunteer team caring for all the barrels.”
The team also includes Katoomba garden club members Margaret and Charlie Brown, Edith Jones and Jean Cowley. Local horticulturist Kerry Brown had also donated her time to select and oversee most of the planting which has extended into a few street beds. Ms Brown said plant thefts and vandalism had caused temporary setbacks.
Mark Jarvis said the chamber had signed a volunteer agreement with council to help weed the bed displays. Anyone interested can call 4782 2883 or secretary@katoombachamber.com
