A newly launched, Lawson-based, newspaper business is in line for a $25,000 St George Bank award. Founders of the business, Crinkling News, will also have the opportunity to spruik their creation at the prestigious TEDx Sydney event later this month.
Crinkling News, the only national newspaper for young Australians which was set up by ex-Sydney Morning Herald journalist Saffron Howden this year, is one of 12 finalists in the St George 2016 Kick Start awards.
St George said the 12 Australian businesses will take the stage at the TEDxSydney event on May 25 to pitch their business idea and be in the running to receive a $25,000 cash grant to help turn their business dreams into reality. TEDxSydney is the leading platform for the propagation of Australian ideas to the rest of the world. A winner for the grant will be announced that day.
Ms Howden said they were “honoured to have been nominated for the Kick Start award."
"Starting a new business was always going to be a rollercoaster ride,” the founding editor said.
“We are putting all our funds into the stories, photographs and graphics to make Crinkling News the best possible newspaper it can be for kids. But with a little help from St George we would be able to tell the children, families and schools who haven't heard about us yet what a unique and fun resource Crinkling is.
"The more readers we have, the better the paper becomes.”
The weekly paper and website tell the same stories that adults read but “without the boring or scary bits”.
