Students at St Thomas Aquinas Primary School took part in the school’s “Mini-Olympics” on May 20.
The day began with officials and athletes’ oaths and an official opening by the principal, Sergio Rosato.
The children took part in a number of events including high jump, marathon run, obstacle course, tug-of-war, long jump, skipping, bocce and dance. The theme for the day was “Fitness, Fairness and Fun”. At the end of the events the students enjoyed an ice-block and sausage sandwich.
Each class was allocated a different country, the students wore the colours of the country and were a part of the parade of nations with the national flag in the closing ceremony. There was an artistic presentation by Year 6 using drama and music to represent the history of the Olympic Games as well as a song by the school choir.
Jenna Jones, who will be participating in six swimming events in the Paralympics in Rio de Janiero, addressed the school. Jenna is an ex-student of St Thomas Aquinas and she was warmly congratulated by the school for being selected for Rio.
All students, teachers and families agreed that the Min-Olympics was a great school community event in which all could participate.
