The big chill hit the Mountains on Friday, with temperatures plummeting and snow reported in towns from Wentworth Falls west.
Significant falls were recorded at Leura, Katoomba, Medlow Bath, Blackheath and Mt Victoria, with the apparent temperature (what it feels like with wind chill factored in) down to minus 10.1 degrees at Blackheath at 8.30 on Friday night.
It started at 4pm on Friday and was heavy enough to force drivers to slow to well below the speed limit. Fortunately, no incidents were reported, said John Hughes, local controller for the SES.
The SES, RFS and police co-ordinated snow patrols along the highway and Bells Line of Road to ensure that motorists weren’t stranded.
Temperatures will remain cool but move up into double figures, the Bureau of Meteorology forecast.
