The Spooky Men’s Chorale are the de facto archdeacons of low frequency vocal mayhem. One of the Blue Mountains’ most successful music exports, they have performed at festivals and concerts all over Australia and internationally, including six critically acclaimed tours of the UK.
Just this year the Spookys entranced crowds at WOMADelaide and in 2017 they will feature as part of the prestigious program lineup for WOMAD UK.
Now, The Spooky Men’s Chorale are set to unleash their marvellous music and eccentricities at the Blue Mountains Theatre & Community Hub on Sunday, July 24 at 2pm with a special winter concert and CD launch, aptly titled “Warm”.
Inspired by the great Georgian male choirs, The Spooky Men were formed in 2001 by deerstalker-topped impresario Stephen Taberner and have single-handedly redefined men's singing in the interim. Unafraid to juxtapose pindrop perfect ballads with hilarious renditions of pop classics (Dancing Queen) and their own repertoire of foolish man anthems (Don't Stand Between a Man and his Tool), they have lovingly hammered gleeful Australian, NZ, UK and European audiences with a bankable series of classics.
As such, The Spooky Men’s Chorale have become the darlings of the UK and European festival circuits with reviews to match: “Enthralling to watch. Spooktacular!” said the Bristol Post; “High camp, epic folly - probably the best programming choice of the entire summer festival circuit” raved The Irish Times.
Described as “part monk, part visigoth, part village idiot”, but for their latest concert and CD launch, they will be significantly biased towards the beautiful end of that spectrum. The CD Warm is a collection of sonorous bon-bons; some original, some Georgian, some covers, and the kind of music you’d like to listen to in a sofa with slippers and a warm brandy. There will be generous smattering of the usual Spooky humour too, but more than anything this will be an afternoon at the theatre to warm your heart and put a pleasant curl in your musical whisker – the perfect antidote for a chilly winter’s day.
