The Blue Mountains Women’s Health and Resource Centre (BMWHRC) is running a seven week group for women who are living with a chronic illness.
“Many women can be overwhelmed by their health condition. They may feel that they have few options, can often feel isolated, helpless and depressed. They may also feel stuck and hopeless about the future and in some cases, angry. This group will help participants to regain some sense of control and power over their illness”, said Lyn Pagan, who along with Jenny Gill, one of the counsellors at the BMWHRC, will be running the group.
“The group will discuss strategies to help women improve their health, including mindfulness techniques which has a proven record as a tool to manage stress and increase psychological well being. It will also provide the opportunity for women to connect with others who are in a similar position. Hopefully it will provide a way forward.”
Doctor Rhonda Barringham will also provide a session on medication and the role of pain clinics as a means of dealing with a chronic illness.
The seven week group, which will meet at the Centre at 124 Lurline Street Katoomba, is for any woman who is experiencing an ongoing illness, including such things as arthritis, diabetes, chronic fatigue, living with a heart condition, multiple sclerosis, emphysema etc. The group will meet on Wednesdays from 10am-noon beginning July 27. The cost is $20 for the course. Bookings are essential. Phone 4782 5133.
