Two local women have banded together to draw attention to the Blue Mountains homeless, while raising $1000 for the Mission Australia Winter Sleepout.
With census data showing about 250 people sleeping rough in the Mountains – in the bush, on the street or in cars - Blaxland artist, Michelle Bowen, together with Hazelbrook business owner, Isabel Arnaiz, hope to encourage others to spend a night without a roof over their heads.
“We are asking others to join us by sleeping outside with us, coming to the event or by donating money or blankets,” Ms Bowen said.
“I have often walked past homeless people in the street and would like to reach out to them. I have lot of sympathy for mental illness which is a common cause. A little bit of kindness can go a long way and if we all band together we can reach those in need,” she added
On Saturday August 13 the duo will spend the night outside the Springwood Baptist Church in their sleeping bags.
Dr Arnaiz said it was about “putting ourselves in the shoes of the homeless so that we can gain further understanding and compassion”.
“We are a rich country and there should not be anyone on the streets.”
The family event will be held at the church on 313 Macquarie Rd in Springwood with activities from 4.30pm. There will be local artists performing, kids entertainment, a sausage sizzle, marshmallow toasting and a soup kitchen.
They are advising participants to “come dressed in your onesie”. People can donate money through the Mission Australia website or during the evening. Go to: https://wintersleepout.gofundraise.com.au/page/michellebowenandp21#.V2C2kUOdMro.facebook
“There is going to be free marshmallows on a stick to cook on the bonfire [and] money collected from the sausage sizzle will be donated to the church as a thank you,” Ms Bowen said.
Other money raised from other activities will go to the cause. Call 0404 729 827 for more details.
