Nepean Area Disabilities Organisation has been a National Disability Insurance Scheme provider since the scheme was launched for young people in Penrith last year.
The organisation is a community-based charity which was founded in 1980 by local families in the Penrith region and now covers the whole of the Nepean including the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury plus the adjoining western suburbs.
NADO CEO, Denise Heath, said to adapt the organisation “on the run” to include the NDIS was “exciting but daunting”.
In roughly a year, more than 40 children and young people have become NDIS participants with the organisation.
“There were some who were previously engaged with NADO and some new participants,” Mrs Heath said.

For one participant, Mrs Ralston, the NDIS created new opportunities for her twin sons, Ryan and Keith, who both have an intellectual disability and cerebral palsy.
The twins, who are now 15, need additional support with socialising, learning needs and therapies which she had been paying for herself.
Mrs Ralston worked with the NDIS provider to get the plan her sons needed for their future independence.
“The boys have many goals to achieve,” Mrs Ralston said,
“But just to start with learning how to become more independent with meal times, to have a shower by themselves, to follow through with therapists activities as well as having access to Vacation Care on school holidays will make an enormous difference to all of our lives.”
With the roll out now in full swing, many participants are now connecting with planners as they consider a future with more opportunities open to them.
Participants can now feel empowered to choose their services.
