NAIDOC week was celebrated at Katoomba High School on Monday July 25 with local elders, community members and local member Trish Doyle.
Trish Doyle was honoured to present the 2016 local Aboriginal student of the year award to Kurtis Rule.
Rule was nominated by David King for his leadership and commitment to community. Kurtis is, as a result of his award, one of only 20 students invited by the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs Leslie Williams to attend the future leaders forum on August 3.
Meeting with Aboriginal, business and government leaders at the forum, Kurtis will have the opportunity to examine topics which have a direct bearing on the future directions of young Aboriginal people.
Kerrie Miller from ACRC also acknowledged the importance of two Blue Mountains NAIDOC awards presented to members of the school. Ian Frape was presented with a lifetime achievement award for his work with Aboriginal students and Jasper Tobin was recognised as the 2016 outstanding young person (male).
The staff and students of Katoomba High are very proud of them and all that they have contributed to their school and community
Following the assembly, elders and community members joined staff and students for a morning tea. The school was humbled to have such valued guests join them.
