The new Springwood Country Club dam, constructed by Blue Mountains Council, is ready for use by firefighting aircraft during bushfire emergencies.
The recent wet weather had helped to go some way to filling the 3.5 megalitre dam on the golf course.
Mayor Mark Greenhill said council provided “the necessary resources to manage this complex engineering project from the design phase through to construction”.
“By working with the club … we were able to complete this vital resource before the next bushfire season.”
Funded by a NSW Government Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing club grant of $80,000, the capacity of the new dam is a seven-fold increase on the original dam – which was 0.5 megalitres in size – and is designed to take advantage of the natural catchment of the golf course and its surrounds.
Member for Blue Mountains, Trish Doyle, said: “The collective efforts of the NSW government funding, council expertise and the club’s support has enhanced community safety and strengthened emergency services capabilities.”
Philip French, Springwood Country Club vice president said it was an important asset to the local community and to the club.
“It adds a welcome challenge to golfers as well as a picturesque setting. We are very happy with the result.”
The site is owned by council and leased to Springwood Country Club Ltd. Council will landscape the new dam and surrounds in spring once it has reached its natural water level.
